What is ieshims.dll doing on my computer?

IEShims.dll contains Internet Explorer Compatibility Shims. A shim is a small library that transparently intercepts an API and changes the arguments passed, handles the operation itself, or redirects the operation elsewhere. It is useful when the behavior of an API changes, causing compatibility issues for older applications which still rely on the older functionality. In such cases, the older API can still be supported by a thin compatibility layer on top of the newer code. This layer is the compatibility shim, contained in IEShims.dll for Internet Explorer.
Non-system processes like ieshims.dll originate from software you installed on your system. Since most applications store data on your hard disk and in your system's registry, it is likely that your computer has suffered fragmentation and accumulated invalid entries which can affect your PC's performance.

In Windows Task Manager, you can see what CPU, memory, disk and network utilization is causing the Internet Explorer process. To access the Task Manager, hold down the Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys at the same time. These three buttons are located on the far left of your keyboard.
