One of the main draws to Apple’s built-in iMessage software has is the claim that the messages sent are completely secure. The truth may be hard to swallow for Apple fans still reeling from NSA privacy breaches.

On Thursday, security firm Quarks Lab released a paper detailing the method by which hackers, or even Apple itself could access the supposedly encrypted messages. According to Quark Labs it is possible for Apple to intercept the message as it passes between the sender and the recipient, making them believe their communication is secure.

In the wake of the growing NSA scandal, Apple issued a statement back in June of this year, emphasizing its “commitment to customer privacy” and confirming that iMessages were completely secure. Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller went so far as to say that the company would have to go to great lengths to undo the end-to-end encryption used for iMessage, and that there was no intention to go ever do so.

On the bright side, security experts have noted that it would be nearly impossible for an outside source to unencrypt iMessage’s data, so the only question left for iPhone users is: how much do you trust Apple with your data?
