What is ieshims.dll doing on my computer?
IEShims.dll contains Internet Explorer Compatibility Shims. A shim is a small library that transparently intercepts an API and changes the arguments passed, handles the operation itself, or redirects the operation elsewhere. It is useful when the behavior of an API changes, causing compatibility issues for older applications which still rely on the older functionality. In such cases, the older API can still be supported by a thin compatibility layer on top of the newer code. This layer is the compatibility shim, contained in IEShims.dll for Internet Explorer.
Non-system processes like ieshims.dll originate from software you installed on your system. Since most applications store data in your system's registry, it is likely that over time your registry suffers fragmentation and accumulates invalid entries which can affect your PC's performance. It is recommended that you check your registry to identify slowdown issues.
