Always ready to give an honest opinion, Apple co-found Steve Wozniak has gone on the record in an interview to call NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden a hero.
Ever since Snowden’s revelations on National Security Agency practices began making the headlines, the whistleblower has been at the center of a growing controversy. For some months, several high-profile figures in the technology industry have called on the US government to pardon or be lenient in Snowden’s case, viewing his actions as being in the public’s best interests.
While speaking at the CeBit conference in Germany last week, Wozniak voiced his opinion in favor of Snowden’s actions. “He is a hero to me, but he may be a traitor to other people and I understand the reasons for them to think that way,” Wozniak said, adding that Snowden had the guts to sacrifice his life for his principles.
It seems that not everyone in the tech industry is in agreement over Snowden, though. Early last week, Microsoft founder Bill Gates told Rolling Stone magazine that he had no admiration for Snowden or his illegal actions. “I certainly wouldn’t characterize him as a hero,” Gates confirmed in his interview.
