The rise of mobile data availability has once more changed the way we communicate, and data-drive messaging services are on the rise, though few can claim to be as popular as WhatsApp. The messaging app now has more than 400 million active users per month according to statement released today.

According to a WhatsApp spokesperson, the company reached this incredible milestone on Thursday, when the service number finally broke 400 million. According to the company, they are the first messaging service to ever accommodate such an incredible amount of active users. On a daily basis, WhatsApp users send an average of 16 billion inbound messages, as well as a total 500 million photos.

Launched in 2009, the hugely popular messaging service has managed to add the last 100 million of its active monthly users within the past four months. With the recent launch of Facebook’s messaging app, there may still be a battle ahead for WhatsApp, but the messaging service might just be able to take on Goliath and win.
