It’s happened to everyone: you’re in the middle of watching the latest viral video sensation on YouTube when suddenly the video stops, and it’s nothing but buffering for the next five minutes. If you don’t enjoy watching videos on YouTube in 2-second bursts, we might just have the solution for you!
You may have noticed the fact that when you play a YouTube video, it does not buffer the entire video, but only just ahead of your position, and sometimes this is not enough. You might also have noticed that if you pause the video, it doesn’t keep buffering as it used to in the early days of YouTube. This is because YouTube switched to a streaming technology called Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (or Dash, if you want to save yourself a mouthful). DASH works by dividing the video into segments and only buffers one segment at a time. This is why you can’t pause a video and return to find it fully loaded.
Just to add insult to slow, buffering injury, YouTube doesn’t allow users to switch DASH off from their own accounts, but brilliant minds out there on the internet have already thought of that. The solution to your YouTube problems is a brilliant browser extension called YouTube Center, which is available for Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera and Safari.
YouTube Center is available to download for free, and once you have it installed on your PC, you can easily switch off DASH by accessing the YoutTube Center Settings menu. Once inside the settings window, you will need to select toe Player tab, and uncheck the box next to DASH playback. Then just sit back, relax, and get ready for the quick-streaming YouTube videos you’ve been dreaming of!
