The 5 most popular operating systems used by desktop owners around the world are all Windows systems, meaning that Microsoft owns an incredible 90% of the market share.
The most popular desktop operating system by far is still Windows 7, which dominates the market with 46.64% of the share to date. Until recently, Mac OS X 10.9 had been the fifth most popular operating system, but the release and rising popularity of Windows 8.1 means that Apple’s desktop operating system has slipped down to a paltry 6th place, with OS X 10.8 following right behind in 7th place.
Windows’ hold on the marketplace is only expected to grow with more users expected to adopt Windows 8 and 8.1 in the coming months. The second most popular desktop operating system is actually the doomed Windows XP, which Microsoft has announced it will no longer offer support for the operating system by April 2014. With this change in mind, many users will likely upgrade to Windows 8.1 before then, though the 12-year-old XP has remained popular with both users and businesses alike.
The increase in popularity for Windows 8.1 shows a healthy gain since it was released in June 2013. The operating system’s growth to 2.64% of the market share is up from 1.72% seen in October and 0.87% seen in September.
