There is no need to get frustrated or getting rid of you poor machine; just read this article for some useful tips to keep your PC a reliable workforce for years to come. You can speed up any old computer by wisely managing the processes running at any given time, and getting rid of the useless ones that make your PC run slower.
Computer processes are programs of various sizes running on your computer. An easy way to reduce the number of processes running simultaneously is to avoid opening multiple instances of the same program. What does this mean? For example, when you are surfing the internet, and want to open new browser windows for different sites, DO NOT click on the taskbar or desktop icon of your browser, e.g. Mozilla Firefox. This will launch another instance of the browser and each of these instances will make your computer run slower and slower. Each new instance means a new process running in the background, and requires additional memory and computing resource from your computer.
Instead, open just a new tab in the existing window by pressing Ctrl + T or by clicking on the small empty tab on the top of the screen. By using this method you will always have just one process running and your computer will not slow down as much. The same principle applies to any other program, not just web browsers: try to avoid launching the same program twice when there is an option to open a new tab or file within the same main window.
If you have successfully reduced the running processes and still experience slow response from your computer, you can kill and delete the processes that run in the background without purpose. These unnecessary processes may exist on your computer for many reasons, for example they might have been left there by a program you have uninstalled or you no longer use or need. Identifying these processes is not easy, but don’t worry – there are useful tools to do this for you.
