Samsung set to donate $3 million to charity after Oscars selfie

When Oscars host Ellen Degeneres decided to take a photo of herself with 12 of Hollywood's biggest stare with her Samsung smartphone, little did she (or anyone) realise that the tweet that would follow would shatter the Twitter retweet record previously held by President Obama. The 810,000 retweets of Obama's post-victory photo seem were made to seem paltry by Degeneres' 3 million, a figure still going strong at the time of writing.

In response to this, Samsung have announced that it will be donating $3 million to Ellen's charities of choice, these being St Jude's and the Humane Society. "While we were a sponsor of the Oscars and had an intergration with ABC, we were delighted to see Ellen organically incorporate the device into the selfie moment that had everyone talking," said a Samsung representative. "A great surprise for everyone, she captured something that nobody expected."
