Samsung Plans Three-Sided Phone Display

If you thought curved displays were a strange development in smartphone technology, they were only the tip of the iceberg. It has been reported that Korean electronics giant Samsung is in the process of developing a smartphone with a three-sided display.

According to a report made by Bloomberg, the phone’s screens will cover the front as well as two of the sides of the phone. The development is supposedly going to work using Samsung’s “Youm” technology, which is the same advancement being used to create the curved Galaxy Round phone. Apparently, the side displays on the phone will be used to display text- such as showing notifications, text messages, or music player information, all without disturbing the main display.

Samsung’s track record of bringing sometimes bizarre new technology to smartphones makes it hard to tell whether this three-sided display will be well received or not. The company’s release of the Galaxy Note helped to usher in the era of phone-tablet hybrids popularly called phablet, which have hit the smartphone market as a huge trend. On the other hand, Samsung’s foray into wearable technology with the smartwatch Galaxy Gear has left users a little less than enthused. With the release of the curved Galaxy Round hotly anticipated by critics and everyday users alike, it is hard to tell how this new innovation will be received.
