Microsoft relaunches its YouTube app for Windows Phone (again)

Posted by: Jennifer Cefai (3 years ago)

We wish we were joking about this, but as a result of a huge battle with Google, Microsoft has had to release its YouTube app for Windows phone for the third time this year. The skirmish (a feature of the ongoing war between the two companies) had originally begun in May of this year. The original app hadgained a lot of attention for its significant lack of ads and a function that allowed users to download videos directly off the website. A cease-and-desist letter from Google followed, and after that the problems intensified.

There were two revocations of the app before Microsoft and Google finally agreed on the build of the app. Unfortunately for Windows Phone users, the new app  is little more than a redirect to the YouTube mobile site – not exactly a win-win situation for either company.
