Retail giants JCPenney recently offered a $10 discount on $25 purchases across all stores in the US. The only catch is that customers verbally had to say ‘hashtag’ at checkout to get it. In a humorous response to Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon’s sketch about hashtag-abuse across social networks, JCPenney announced a Hashtag Discount Day across all its social media accounts.
A good idea or a ridiculous one? Certainly it proved to be a success for JCPenney, but considering how the store is struggling in terms of online sales, maybe it should have shifted focus on standard, internet-friendly hashtag use.
