Rumors about Amazon going into the smartphone market have been making the rounds for ages, but so far have been denied. Now it seems that there might actually be some truth to it, with sources claiming that HTC will be building Amazon’s first smartphone.
Once again both Amazon and HTC have denied the rumors, but in an interview with The Financial Times, HTC CMO Ben Ho stated that “We have been very focused on building our own brand, but we have also been very open to co-branding and collaborating with carriers and other technology brands.”
Whilst this is massive news for Amazon, it’s certainly more important for HTC, who have had a year of internal trouble along with its first-ever quarterly loss. HTC was once known as the company that built smartphones for other people, but proved itself with flagship phones of its own like the HTC One. The problem came with actually selling the phone, a field where competitors like Samsung have HTC utterly beaten. Whilst HTC focuses on upping its problematic marketing strategy, this deal with Amazon could be just what the Taiwanese company needs.
