How to Hide a Folder in Windows

Time for a little bit of subterfuge: did you know that it’s possible to hide folders from view on your PC? If you’ve got private documents you’d like to keep away from prying eyes, the option to hide a folder is fantastic, and you don’t even need a special program to do it.

Of course it is always possible to encrypt a folder or a file and make sure it is password protected, but if your secret folders cannot be seen, then the temptation to attempt to open them doesn’t exist, and your password can never get lost and lock you out forever. To keep your private affairs private is a very quick and simple process that anyone can do.

First, start by identifying the file or folder you would like to hide. Make sure it is in a location you remember, as you will not be able to see it later. Right click the file or folder you would like to hide and select Properties from the menu. In the General tab, check the “Hidden” option and then select OK.

Your file or folder will now be hidden completely and kept private.

If you want to see your secret files again, all you need to do is open your Control Panel, and then select the Appearance and Personalization link, and then choose Folder Options. Inside the Folder Options window, click on the View tab, and select the option “Show hidden files, folders and drives”. Be aware that once this is selected, all your private files and folders will be visible until you select “Don’t show hidden files, folders and drivers”.

Make sure you make a note of where you hide your private files and folders and always try to keep sensitive information well-protected.
