Google Maps inspires dog rescue

Los Angeles resident Patrick Pittenger unwittingly saved a stray dog’s life when he accessed Google Street View to show his girlfriend his new place of work. Pittenger had been feeding the dog in question (who he nicknamed Sonya) ever since he started at his new place of work a month previously, but could not take her in owing to his own dog’s immunity problems. Thanks to Google’s real-time technology Pittenger spotted Sonya lying on the pavement outside his workplace and contacted Hope for Paws, a local animal rescue group, who immediately saw to rescuing the dog and taking care of her.

Luckily Sonya’s story has a happy ending, as Pittinger’s own mom chose to adopt her herself. Despite what naysayers might have to complain about when it comes to Google’s cameras, they at least have to admit there is an upside to them when it comes to a situation like this.
