Facebook will soon be able to identify your favorite shows and bands

Facebook has announced that it will soon be rolling out a new audio fingerprinting feature, in the style of music recognition service Shazam. The Facebook mobile app will be equipped with an audio fingerprinting tool. Say you enjoy Breaking Bad. While watching Walt and Jesse on their latest caper, all you have to do is click a button within the app. The service will come into play there, identifying the audio and, with that, taking you to a forum where you can discuss What Walt Did Next with fellow Breaking Bad lovers.

It will require some heavy lifting on the part of Facebook's servers, which will have to make the correct link between user and forum. However, it could lend a lot to Facebook's revenue in terms of television advertising. If people use Facebook while watching TV, companies would look into advertising on both mediums. Facebookers should expect the new feature in "the coming weeks," at least those who use the iOS or Android apps.
