Facebook testing new 'Shortcuts' feature

Posted by: Jennifer Cefai (2 years, 5 months ago)

Facebook appears to be rolling out a new feature to its users that would make finding your friends that much easier. Called 'Shortcuts', the new feature gives each user a unique 8-digit number that will act as an instant link to their profile once inputted. This 'shortcut' will minimize the problem of searching for friends by name, something that can be more often than not common to multiple users (think: John Smith!).

Only a small amount of users have the feature available at the moment, so the effect of such a feature has yet to be felt. Theoretically, it makes a lot of sense - combing through a list of names is not much fun. Whether it will take is uncertain. Memorizing an 8-digit code is relatively simple, it's like having another phone number at the end of it. But will many people bother? This is the question that needs to be answered.
