If there’s an update on Facebook you don’t feel comfortable “liking”, then there may be a solution. Speaking yesterday at the company’s annual Compassion Research Day, the Facebook engineering team announced that they had created a “Sympathize” button. Understanding that “Like” might be somewhat generic in certain situations, “Sympathize” is meant to address the more particular of status updates. On the other hand, while some people may doubt it for only relating to a niche, it can actually cover a variety of situations. For example:

  • Someone lamenting about a parking ticket.
  • A friend grumbling about her single mom’s latest antics.
  • A post written in memory of a late family member.

Facebook have not added the button yet in any case. At any rate the introduction of the “Sympathize” button might open up a discussion to bring in even more buttons.
