CAPTCHA Cracked by Artificial Intelligence

If you think CAPTCHAs have become increasingly difficult over the past few years, you’re not imagining things: they have. As artificial intelligence has advanced, CAPTCHAs have had to work to stay ahead of the curve, but AI start up Vicarious may have just cracked the code.

AI start up Vicarious has announced that they have developed a brand new piece of software capable of cracking any type of CAPTCHA with a minimum 90% accuracy. Even Google’s reCAPTCHA, which has proved to be nigh-unbreakable was no match for Vicarious’ AI software. In the past, squashed and distorted letters and numbers were enough to prevent computers from detecting the correct characters, which is why CAPTCHAs have become trickier lately.

For years, CAPTCHAs have acted as a way to discern authentic human activity from spam bots and other unwanted automated processes. However, as technology has evolved, it’s become easier for programs to learn to crack simple CAPTCHAs, leading to the verification process becoming more and more complicated. These days CAPTCHAs have become so complicated in many cases that many people report attempting to answer correctly multiple times before finally succeeding.

Thankfully for websites around the globe, Vicarious currently has no plans to release their AI software to the public. Unfortunately for the rest of us, this means CAPTCHAs are around a little while longer.
